The Reason for Evocations
“When I was called, I came without arguing. So I would ask: Why did you send for me?” – Peter (Acts 10:29)
The question that Peter asked the Centurion Cornelius is of great significance in the Acts of the Apostles.
This Roman officer had the reputation of being an upright and charitable man, He solicited the presence of the disciple of Jesus to attend to matters of a higher moral order after receiving generous counsel from an emissary from Heaven. However, upon arriving at Cornelius’ home, the levelheaded former fisherman from Capernaum asked:
“Why did you end for me?”
Simon needed to know the reason for this request just as conscientious workers would like to know exactly where they stand and why they have summoned to someone else’s field.
This expressive picture proposes many considerations to new students of the Gospel.
Many people, upon hearing references made for this or that high order spirit, would like to invoke its presence in doctrinal meetings.
Such a decision, however, would be both untimely and senseless.
We do not have to attribute this impulse to frivolity, but we must try to evaluate the importance of the purposes at play.
Let us imagine summoning Simon Peter to a particular prayer meeting, and let us suppose that the venerable apostle acquiesces. Naturally, you would be obliged to explain to this great heavenly emissary the reason for your request. And basing our mental attitudes on good sense, let us ask ourselves if we are spiritually mature enough to see, to listen and to understand this glorious spirit. Which one of us would respond affirmatively? Would we have the audacity to invoke the sublime Cephas merely to hear him speak?
